Over several weeks ...This is Anonymous Pops again. Over several weeks many things had come to mind on this subject, but as I was immersed in 6 weeks of training and had precious little time to sleep and even less time to consider church calendars.

Two points surely must be made in addition to my previous post.

1. Preaching Romans? There is NO QUESTION that would be Biblical! I repeat my statements on your wedding video, "preach the word!"

2. It is important to note that my first response addresses what happens during Sunday worship or church mandated services. At home, with your family, and otherwise is a different matter.

PopsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7097879591457425962.post-76998992684054681222008-02-18T07:10:00.000-08:002008-02-18T07:10:00.000-08:00Lord Polonius in Shakespeare's Hamlet says that br...Lord Polonius in Shakespeare's Hamlet says that brevity is the soul of wit. How could one possibly have enough soul to respond to this story within the confines of this tiny comment box? I will try, but it will require work on the part of the reader.

As always, we must start with definitions. What is Biblical? What is regulative or prescriptive and what is normative and what is your position on these?

Directly, my position differs from yours. To fully understand, listen to the two Sunday School lessons at www.christpresbyterian.org, select sermons, then select School of Discipleship series ..., then select Biblical Theology Pt3. After listening to that listen to Biblical Theology Pt4. It fully addresses the issue. I would also direct you to work done by Hughes Olifant Old, just Google his name.

Of course, there is no mention in Scripture of a church calendar, nor its observance. The early church did not do it, and it did not begin to be seriously practiced until about 350 AD when the Roman church began incorporating works righteousness as things done in order to be saved.

Christian piety is better nurtured with a weekly cycle, the 7 day God ordained cycle. An annual cycle with joy only coming twice a year is also a pattern of natural theology or nature religions. The observance of the Lord's Day, has no such natural cycle attached to it.

Lastly, why do evangelical churches long for a church calendar? Because of their shallowness and lack of substantive worship. They stive for transcendance in a purely imminent worship environment. He is both.

One more thing, sermons may suffer. The pastor loses time in addressing the needs of that particular congregation when he is committed to following a church calendar. It constantly breaks up what he is trying to do.

I am behind on editing/posting my recordings (and responding to your blog) but I DO have these two very important ones uploaded for the world to enjoy. I hope that all who read this, including you(!) will suffer the time to listen to at least these two on this subject. They are the complete answer for this inadequate response.

Love always - PopsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
